Maryland - National Shrine Grotto, Covered Bridges
We decided to go on an afternoon excursion to find covered bridges in Maryland. There were only three but it was fun tracking them down. We were able to see beautiful countryside and gorgeous homes. All the covered bridges were Red, and one way, meaning one car at an time. They all have some history and names, that I’m sharing.
Our other find was the National Shrine Grotto and Mount ST. Marys University. We enjoyed walking thru this very old and peaceful place. We needed a second day since we found it right before closing and needed a lot more than 30 minutes to explore it. This place reminded me of the Grotto in Portland, which reminded me of my childhood, and my grandmother, who use to volunteer there. My sons also sang in the Grotto church with their school choirs. The acoustics were phenomenal (really good). Anyway, I felt a little nostalgia, being in this beautiful and peaceful place.
The first Church you’ll see below is ST Anthony’s, it was established in 1897. A beautiful structure with lots of detail, very ornate. We found it on our way to the Grotto.

The Grotto was peaceful and the artwork and statues were beautiful. The stained glass in the chapel was gorgeous.

Bridge #3 below was really cute but there was no where to stop so I just got one quick photo.
The Utica Mills Covered Bridge, circa 1850, is located on Utica Road off of Old Frederick Road. Shortest of the three bridges.
