Poche Plantation, Louisiana

Louisiana was very humid. I had a hard time adjusting. It also was cold in the morning, so I found myself wearing jeans then regretting it as the day went on. We stayed a week so we could see the local sites, like the Plantations, and both Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

Poche Plantation was the site of the RV park. The house is considered a historical site. We received a tour from the camp host on our second day. The house was beautiful and the stories interesting. The rooms and furnishings were authentic to the time period, but unique to the area, as it was Victorian style with unique dormers (roof and window) that weren’t typical for this area at that time. It was built after the civil war. The fireplaces were all different, and it is said to be because they were taken from homes destroyed in the war. Originally built close to the Mississippi so that the owners could get the breeze from the river. Since flooding was a problem in the area, the corp of engineers moved the home so they could construct a damn system to control flooding. It was thought to be unusual that they’d move the home rather than destroy it, but the owner was a prominent judge —might have had something to do with it!

Just down the road was St. Michaels Church, Cemetery and Mausoleum. We visited the church and like most older churches, it was beautiful. The organ was Grand, but placed above in the balcony so it was to dark to get a good picture.

We walked through the unique cemetery. It was very old and many parts of the cemetery were damaged. It was strange to see so many mausoleum doors open or crumbling. I am sharing pictures of the cemetery because I found it so interesting. The area we were in was called St. Michael Parish. Rather than County, they use Parish. It took us awhile to figure that out. Seeing the references to so many church names, we knew something was up. The things we are learning on our journey… Lol

Parish instead of County is only unique to Louisiana.
